The machine the Ranorex License Manager is installed on acts as a license server. It automatically distributes and revokes floating license to and from client machines. This is why you need to install the License Manager on a machine that can be reached through the network by all machines you want to use a floating license on. I would like to propose a setting in studio and in the agent by where the locking of a floating license can be modified per system to where only when a test is running does a key get reserved.
At this time I have agents sitting idle yet they are using up one of my keys. This has caused me to run into a false error state of no more keys available when in fact nothing is actually running.
If we had this switch then studio/agents could have a timeout/retry value put in place so that a test could be queued up to run when a key becomes available.
If this feature is added as a configurable setting then for instances where you need 100% reservation of a key, only those machines would behave in that way until the key pool is exhausted.

If Studio or another Ranorex tool like Spy or Agent are open, they will consume a license key. Studio requires a premium license to be used, which is the reason it consumes a key when opened. The same goes for Spy. The Agent on the other hand can work with a runtime or premium license because its job is just to execute tests, not develop them. Agent consumes a key so that it can be ready to execute a test as soon as a job is assigned. There are pros and cons to each approach with the Agent. If the Agent only leased a license key when you wanted to start a job, it is possible that there would be no licenses available which would cause Agent to not run the test.
When it comes to idle time, the entire user session must be considered idle for a license release. Please see below for more clarification:
o Idle time means:
? No user interaction, i.e. keyboard, mouse, touch input for XX minutes
? Or Screensaver on
? Or PC locked
? AND No Ranorex interaction, i.e. no searches, no processing in tools (Studio, Recorder, Spy)
o These events lead to an immediate license release:
? Application exit
? PC shuts down, hibernates, goes to sleep
? User logs off (which in turn leads the application to exit)
o These events will lead to immediate license release however license will be locked for 5 minutes:
? Ranorex Process killed via Service Manger
? Ranorex crashed. Bios xbox.

Although this idea is already declined, I wanted to inform you about an important change. We are planning to remove the license consumption for agents with the next Release. This means, that only the text execution will consume a license, but the Ranorex Agent won’t.

In parallel we have contacted the Ranorex Support regarding this issue, but we are currently urgently searching for a solution. We have been trying to upgrade Ranorex Studio and Ranorex License Server from version 5.2.x to 5.3.x several weeks ago (currently we have installed version 5.4.1).
While the connection to the license server (floating license installed) is possible with Ranorex Studio version 5.2.x, it is no longer possible with version 5.3.x or higher. When connecting to it, we get this error message: 'The License Manager. Was contacted, but no suitable license was available. Please add additional licenses to your License Manager or wait until licenses become available.' In fact a free license IS available.
TCP and UDP port 7266 is open at the license server computer. If we downgrade to a Ranorex Studio version 5. Ezdrummer Authorization Code Serial. 2.x, we can connect to the license server. But any Ranorex Studio version 5.3.x or higher cannot connect to it and receives this error message. We have currently installed license server 5.4.1.

The error message means that the license server could indeed be contacted, but does not have any free valid licenses available. You can easily check that using the Ranorex License Server/Manager Tool by looking at the 'Subscription' column. The subscription date of a license key needs to be '02/2015' or later to be a valid key for Ranorex 5.3. If you have a valid subscription, be sure that the newest license key is installed on the server (you get a new key every time you renew your subscription). Regards, Alex Ranorex Team.
